As your constituent, I urge you to keep the U.S. out of a new war with Iran. While a tentative ceasefire has now taken hold, your support is vital to ensure that the ceasefire holds and that the U.S. is not drawn further into what could be a long and devastating regional war.
The U.S. bombing of the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear energy facilities on June 21 was an illegal act of aggression that violated both international and U.S. law. This unprovoked attack by the U.S. also violated the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which are clear that the president must seek congressional approval before engaging in hostilities against another country.
The Iranian attacks on the U.S. bases in Qatar and Iraq on June 23 also risked further expanding this war.
Even with a ceasefire in place, the risk of a return to fighting remains. I therefore ask that you support Sen. Kaine’s War Powers Resolution and Rep. Massie and Rep. Khanna’s bipartisan War Powers Resolution in the House. No president can be allowed to pull the U.S. into a new and costly war without congressional involvement. This is the time for Congress to assert its war powers authority.
I also ask that you urge the Trump administration to take steps to stop Israel’s violence across the region. Israel’s unilateral attack on Iran was a violation of international law and further threatens global and regional security. And even as Israel attacks Iran, it has continued its genocide in Gaza. It has also bombed Yemen and Syria and repeatedly attacked Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement. Israel must be held to account. I therefore ask you to:
-- Support war powers legislation to keep the U.S. out of Israel’s war against Iran.
-- Oppose further direct U.S. military engagement, additional troops, airstrikes, or other military actions against Iran.
-- Support the ceasefire between Israel and Iran and affirm that the U.S. remains committed to ongoing and long-term diplomatic engagement with Iran.
-- Institute an immediate arms embargo on Israel.
-- Demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the region.
-- Abide by U.S. and international laws to prevent further atrocities and erosion of the existing international system of protection.
I hope that you will do all that you can to peacefully end this violence and work toward lasting peace and security for all.
