As our country heads into the coming months, millions of Americans face the real possibility of hunger—and children are among the most vulnerable. The combination of rising food costs and sweeping cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) threatens our social fabric.
Recent federal policy changes under President Trump have:
• Cut billions in nutrition-aid, shifting costs to states and reducing benefit eligibility.
• Raised food prices sharply, making basic groceries harder to afford for low-income families.
• Silenced the key government reporting system that tracks hunger and food insecurity.
Allowing hunger to spread while children go without is not incidental—it is a failure of leadership. If our election system is meaningful and government is by and for the people, then legislators must do more than vote—they must act.
Therefore I demand you immediately:
1. Commit to restoring and protecting SNAP benefits to ensure no child goes hungry.
2. Ensure funding for food-banks, school meal programs, and emergency food relief is expanded before November.
3. Publicly explain why you will let these cuts happen while food prices rise and families struggle.
4. Use your authority to hold accountable any agency, executive or legislative effort that undermines food security for Americans.
Your constituents will remember whether you responded to this crisis or ignored it. Hunger isn’t just a charity issue—it’s a public-health, educational and economic issue. If you fail now, you erode trust in government, deepen division and create cynicism about democracy itself.
