Demand Accountability and Due Process for ICE Shooting Victim

I’m writing to urge you to demand a full investigation and hearings into the ICE shooting of Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez in Patterson California in order to ensure he receives due process protections. People are fed up with this administration. ICE Director Todd Lyons falsely claimed Mendoza Hernandez was wanted for murder in El Salvador, but court documents from October 2019 show he was acquitted and ordered released immediately. This misrepresentation was used to justify a shooting that may have been entirely unjustified. Given the record of lies and falsehoods emitted by DHS, ICE, and its leaders, enforcing due process becomes essential. We know they’re lying, because it’s a pattern we all know: Dashcam footage contradicts ICE's claim that Mendoza Hernandez weaponized his vehicle. His attorney argues the video shows Mendoza Hernandez doing everything possible to avoid hitting them. We cannot ignore or forget that federal immigration officers shot 14 people between September and February, with seven shootings justified by claims that moving vehicles posed threats. Videos have contradicted administration accounts before, including the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis in January. Mendoza Hernandez has no criminal record in the U.S. and was stopped only for minor traffic infractions. His fiancée and attorney have been denied access to him since the shooting. He has a 2-year-old daughter and his family deserves answers. Further ICE must be held accountable for providing false information and potentially using excessive force. Uphold due process.
