Stop Wasting Taxpayer Dollars on Gold-Plated Vanity Projects

I am demanding an immediate explanation for why taxpayer dollars intended to maintain America’s national parks are instead being spent on political vanity projects. According to public reports, the Trump administration ordered the National Park Service to spend approximately $5 million to cover four horse statues with 23.75-karat gold leaf. That is money Congress appropriated to protect our national parks—not to decorate statues with gold. Our National Park System already faces a deferred maintenance backlog measured in the tens of billions of dollars. Roads are crumbling, bridges need repairs, historic buildings are deteriorating, trails are unsafe, visitor facilities need upgrades, and critical infrastructure continues to age. Park employees have repeatedly been asked to do more with less. Yet somehow there is money available to gild statues? How is this a responsible use of taxpayer dollars? Families are struggling to afford groceries, housing, health care, and gas. Communities are asking for investments in clean water, wildfire prevention, and infrastructure. Our national parks desperately need repairs that improve safety and preserve America’s natural and historic treasures for future generations. Instead, millions are being diverted to a project that serves no meaningful public purpose. This is exactly the kind of waste, fraud, and abuse that politicians claim they want to eliminate. If that commitment is genuine, then this project should be investigated immediately. I expect Congress to demand a full accounting of who authorized this expenditure, what legal authority was used, why it was prioritized over essential park maintenance, and whether any appropriated funds were improperly redirected. If this project violates congressional intent, those responsible must be held accountable and the remaining funds redirected to the maintenance backlog where they belong. Americans deserve functioning national parks—not gold-plated political monuments. Put an end to this waste and start respecting the taxpayers who paid for it.
