A Call for Consistency and Free Speech

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the censure of Representative Al Green and to address what I perceive as a troubling double standard within the Republican Party. This request for censure, following Representative Green’s actions during the State of the Union address, needs to be evaluated within a broader context of political discourse, particularly in a time when we, as Americans, are facing increasing threats to our right to free speech and the fair expression of our views. Historically, moments of political dissent have been part of the fabric of the State of the Union. For example, Representative Joe Wilson’s infamous “You lie!” shout during President Obama’s 2009 speech was an act of disruption that many in the chamber disagreed with, yet it did not lead to censure. More recently, during President Biden’s State of the Union address in 2024, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene not only shouted at the president but also wore an unapproved MAGA hat and later called him a “liar.” Her outburst and the political symbolism of the hat were disruptive, yet no official sanction was pursued. These incidents, both past and recent, show that heated exchanges and gestures of dissent are far from isolated. As we review the actions of Representative Green, I ask that we also reflect on whether such double standards should continue. Are we now going to sanction the members who wore political hats in this year’s State of the Union? It is essential that we hold ourselves to the same standards and be consistent in the treatment of political speech and expressions, regardless of party affiliation. In addition, I urge you to consider the thoughtful words of Representative Jim McGovern, who wisely stated, “There was a breach of decorum last night, but it wasn’t Al Green. It was the president of the United States who stood at the podium and delivered a manifesto of pure fantasy.” While frustration with our political climate is understandable, let us not lose sight of who is truly making America a mockery both at home and on the global stage. It is imperative that we, as Americans, not allow ourselves to be silenced or dismissed when we voice our concerns. Rather than pursuing censure, I call on you to ensure that our political discourse remains vibrant, inclusive, and consistent with the values that our democracy is built upon.
