Oppose & Vote NO on Billy Long as IRS Commissioner - Unfit, Unethical

Today I’m writing to urge you to oppose the appointment of Billy Long as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. He’s unfit to serve in a post that manages the country’s taxation structure because of his long record of questionable tax practices. Mr. Long's activities promoting the so-called "tribal tax credit" and fraudulent pandemic-era employee retention tax credit undermine confidence in fair and ethical tax administration. When in Congress, he was a sponsor of bills to abolish the IRS altogether. A completely ludicrous idea. This background alone is a giant red flag about his ability to lead the IRS in enforcing tax laws impartially and combating abusive practices. In fact, his entire experience in tax advising consists of a certificate he earned in a three day course offered by a tax advising firm. During Covid, he focused on a pandemic-era tax break, known as the employee-retention tax credit. That credit soon became a magnet for fraud during the Covid period. It cost the government hundreds of billions more than initially expected. The I.R.S., burdened with what it worried were ineligible claims, froze that credit in 2023. Long’s company enlisted advisors of dubious character as well. Rather than appointing someone who enabled dubious tax schemes, the President must nominate an IRS Commissioner with unimpeachable integrity committed to upholding the law and protecting taxpayers. Long is simply another possible fraudster enlisted to give breaks to businesses. I urge you to question him closely on all his activities and record. No one likes to pay taxes, but wrecking the tax-collecting machinery of the government as Long likely would, would be catastrophic to the country’s finances. So would dealing out preferential treatment to businesses or conducting politically motivated tax scrutiny to political enemies would also be his ‘mission’ in office. However, ultimately I urge you to reject this nomination. Billy long is unfit to hold any office. Vote NO on Billy Long for IRS Commissioner.
