I am writing to you as a deeply concerned American who refuses to watch our democracy be chipped away piece by piece. The right to vote is the foundation of our freedom. Without it, every other right collapses. That is why I urge you to immediately pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, reject the dangerous SAVE Act, and stand firm in protecting every citizen’s voice—especially women’s.
It is unthinkable that in 2025 we are still fighting battles that our grandmothers fought more than a century ago. The idea that women’s right to vote could be questioned, dismissed, or undermined by elected officials is an outrage. It is an insult to the legacy of suffragists who bled, suffered, and endured arrest to secure the most basic right of a citizen. For anyone in public office—such as Pete Hegseth—to openly suggest that women should not have the right to vote is an assault not only on women, but on the very legitimacy of American democracy.
The SAVE Act is not about “election integrity.” It is about voter suppression. It is designed to add barriers, intimidate voters, and silence lawful voices in our elections. At the same time, communities of color, women, young people, and working-class Americans continue to face obstacles when trying to exercise their constitutional rights at the ballot box. Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is not just a political choice—it is a moral necessity to restore the protections gutted by the Supreme Court and ensure equal access to the ballot for every American.
Congress has a duty to defend democracy, not dismantle it. You swore an oath to uphold the Constitution. That oath demands that you stand against those who would strip rights away and instead expand access to the ballot so every citizen—regardless of race, gender, or background—can make their voice heard.
History will remember what you do now. Either you protect the right to vote for all Americans, or you enable those who would drag us backward into an era of disenfranchisement and exclusion. The choice is yours, and the people are watching.
Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Reject the SAVE Act. Protect the right of women—and all Americans—to vote.
