An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Preserve USPS independence and affordability for all Americans.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) plays a crucial role in providing universal mail service to all Americans, regardless of location or financial status. Privatizing this essential service would jeopardize its affordable rates and reliable delivery, particularly in rural areas where private companies may deem service unviable. The reported $9.5 billion loss in fiscal year 2024 does not negate the agency's importance nor justify dismantling its governance structure established by the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970. Subjecting the USPS to potential price gouging and reduced coverage under corporate interests would be a disservice to the public it is meant to serve. Therefore, I urge reconsideration of the purported executive order to transfer control of the USPS to the Commerce Department, as this independent agency must retain its congressionally-mandated status and universal service obligation for the benefit of all citizens.
