“Federal Law must catch up to the reality we’re living.” - Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia
Today I take pen in hand to write and urge your support for The Extreme Heat Economic Study Act of 2025. (H.R. 3702 / S. 1743) It would first and foremost bolster the Stafford Act to help states during climate-driven disasters, of which heat is the most deadly.
This is a real attempt to codify and put real actionable numbers and insights to the far-reaching consequences of excessive heat on our communities. It was written in response to Phoenix, Arizona reaching a record 118 degrees in July, 2025.
The threat of extreme heat events poses severe risks to public health, infrastructure integrity, and economic productivity. This demands a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted impacts through rigorous analysis.
Gaining this knowledge is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies and allocating resources to safeguard lives, protect critical systems, and fortify economic resilience in the face of intensifying climate challenges.
Prioritizing preparedness through evidence-based policymaking will ultimately save lives and prevent substantial economic losses.
I urge you to support this vital legislation and its potential to truly inform proactive measures against the escalating threat of extreme heat waves caused by our warming planet owing to the use of fossil fuels.
