Oppose HUD's Proposed Rule Stripping LGBTQ+ Housing Protections

Oppose HUD's proposed "Equal Access to Housing in HUD Programs Revisions" rule before the public comment period closes June 29. This rule doesn't just redefine gender — it quietly strips "sexual orientation" from all HUD regulations entirely, a change that goes beyond Trump's January 20 executive order and was made without any public transparency. The real-world consequences are severe. Federally funded shelters would be forced to place people based on sex assigned at birth, turning transgender women away from women's shelters. Shelter providers could demand ID documents or medical records as "proof" of sex — and HUD hasn't even defined what qualifies. This is happening while 61% of states and territories already lack enough shelter beds to meet demand. The Supreme Court ruled in Bostock v. Clayton County (2020) that sex discrimination includes discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. This rule invites exactly that. Submit a formal comment to HUD opposing this rule and push colleagues to do the same. Senator Warren and 23 Senate Democrats have already called on HUD Secretary Turner to withdraw it. The Senate just passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act 85-5 to expand housing access — gutting protections for the most vulnerable people simultaneously is indefensible. Stand against this rule.
