An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject inhumane US-El Salvador prison transfer deal

4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The proposed deal between the US and El Salvador to house violent criminals, deportees of any nationality, and potentially even US citizens in Salvadoran prisons raises grave human rights concerns that cannot be ignored. Transferring inmates to a country with known issues of overcrowding, lack of due process, and inhumane conditions in its prison system is a blatant violation of basic rights and human dignity. This deal commodifies human beings and treats them as disposable, violating principles of justice and human rights that should be upheld regardless of an individual's background or crimes committed. A practice rooted in authoritarianism and disregard for legal protections, it emboldens backsliding democracies and regimes known for cruel treatment of prisoners. Such a callous policy disgraces American values and undermines its standing as a rights-respecting nation on the global stage. This disturbing agreement must be firmly rejected to uphold human rights commitments and prevent egregious abuses.
