Fix an Unjust Reversal: Recognize the Chinook Nation

I’m writing as a constituent to urge you to support federal recognition for the Chinook Indian Nation. The Chinook Nation has a well-documented and continuous presence in the Columbia River region and has already met the core criteria for federal acknowledgment. In fact, recognition was granted in 2001 and then rescinded shortly afterward—an unusual and deeply concerning reversal that undermines confidence in the federal recognition process. Federal recognition is not symbolic; it determines whether a tribal nation can fully exercise sovereignty, access federal programs, and preserve its cultural and governmental continuity. Continued denial of recognition in this case raises serious concerns about fairness, consistency, and administrative integrity within the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs acknowledgment process. I recognize that Congress is balancing many national priorities, but this is a long-standing issue that is ready for resolution. The Chinook Nation’s petition has been extensively reviewed over decades. There is no clear justification for continued delay. I respectfully urge you to take action by supporting legislation or administrative remedies that will restore federal recognition to the Chinook Nation, and to advocate for a fair and transparent resolution with the Department of the Interior.
