Gun law reform NOW

Enough. Your prayer asking God to stop the violence is a blasphemous refusal of your own duty to stop taking Judas money from the NRA, and to stop treating the Second Amendment like it is one of the Ten Commandments instead of a relic from the age of muskets and flintlocks in need of new understanding. God doesn’t need your prayers in order to care about the tragedy of gun violence. What is missing is not a God who cares but lawmakers who will stop blaming heaven every time someone dies while THEY refuse to pass sane gun laws. I’m old enough to remember when the NRA was focused on responsible gun ownership and firearm safety. Sadly, it has become an organization representing gun manufacturers that profit from violence, death, paranoia, and mayhem. And even more regrettably, the Second Amendment seems to have been tacitly rewritten to mean that anyone can buy as many guns as they wish to own and may use them with impunity; if you get hurt or killed, too bad. Of all the freedoms we enjoy, the right to be safe in public spaces is paramount. Please separate support for the Second Amendment from the agenda of the NRA. People shouldn’t have to die because they went to the grocery store. Children shouldn’t have to die at their elementary school. We deserve to live. In case you’re still paralyzed with indecision about this issue - as you seem to have been since the expiration of the assault weapons ban in September 2004 - this will help you get started. 1. Mandate universal background checks and a 14-day waiting period for all gun purchases. 2. Require a minimum purchase age of 21. 3. Require licensing for all firearms, which cannot be obtained without the owner taking comprehensive gun safety training course. 4. Prohibit private gun sales and sales at gun shows. 5. Impose a ten-round magazine limit. 6. Reinstate absolute bans on automatic and semi-automatic guns. 7. Ban bump stocks and cranks. 8. Mandate biometric locks. 9. Strengthen prohibitions on those with ANY domestic violence or assault charges or convictions being able to obtain a gun. 10. Drastically increase the criminal penalties for those who are negligent in how they keep and store their guns in situations where someone was harmed and/or killed because of their negligence. 11. Prohibit the sale of realistic looking toy guns that can lead to police making grievous errors in judgment. 12. Repeal the Dickey Amendment so that the CDC can gather and analyze data on gun violence. 13. Require all states to implement procedures for obtaining GVROs (Gun Violence Restraining Orders). No one wants to hear your pious invocation of a higher power. No one really believes that “thoughts and prayers” are sufficient. Enact MEANINGFUL gun safety measures NOW. This is on YOU. Do your damn job.
