An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Hegseth Ordered War Crimes, Wasted Billions on Luxuries, Broke Faith—Impeach

I am your constituent writing in strong agreement with your efforts to defend democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law, and protect civilians in U.S. military operations. I appreciate your work and want to add my voice in support of stronger, public accountability for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and President Trump. Recent reporting on the Pentagon’s September 2025 spending spree shows tens of billions of dollars pushed out the door in a single month, with millions spent on luxury food, furniture, and prestige items while many military families and veterans struggle to afford basic care. This is a profound breach of trust with taxpayers and with the service members whose sacrifices are used to justify the defense budget. At the same time, Secretary Hegseth’s “no quarter, no mercy” rhetoric toward enemies, his minimization of civilian casualties, and his pattern of framing war as a kind of crusade raise serious concerns about compliance with U.S. and international law, as well as about long‑term damage to our alliances and moral standing. When the defense secretary openly and repeatedly urged the commission of war crimes—and the president endorsed and enabled that posture—they broke the covenant between the U.S. government and the people. I am asking you to continue leading, in a way that invites bipartisan support, on three fronts: 1) Champion full public accounting of the 2025 Pentagon spending surge and reforms that end “use‑it‑or‑lose‑it” luxury spending while protecting readiness and care for troops and veterans. 2) Support transparent investigations—through hearings and independent review—into whether Secretary Hegseth’s policies, rhetoric, and operational decisions comply with U.S. and international law, and whether they warrant censure, removal, or other consequences. 3) Insist that Congress reassert its constitutional role in authorizing and overseeing the use of military force so that no president or Cabinet official, of either party, can act as a king with our treasury or our troops. Thank you for the work you have already done. Please know that many of your constituents agree with you and are counting on you to keep pressing for accountability, restraint, and a foreign policy consistent with American values.
