An open letter to the U.S. Congress

ICE must stop racial profiling and wear visible ID

The treatment of Andrea Velez, a U.S. citizen, by federal immigration agents in downtown Los Angeles is deeply concerning. The video footage shows she was arrested while simply on her way to work, with no apparent justification or due process. This appears to be a case of racial profiling based solely on her Hispanic appearance. Detaining American citizens without cause is an unacceptable violation of civil liberties. Immigration enforcement should focus on pursuing legitimate threats and serious criminals, not harassing law-abiding individuals going about their daily lives. Racial bias has no place in the actions of federal law enforcement agencies serving all citizens equally under the law. This incident highlights the need for greater accountability, oversight, and reforms to immigration enforcement practices. Heavy-handed tactics that disregard constitutional rights only breed more mistrust between communities and authorities. We must have smarter, more judicious policies that respect due process while upholding national security. I urge you to thoroughly investigate this case and take concrete steps to prevent racial profiling by immigration agents going forward.
