Oppose H.J. 87-88-89 Attacks on Clean Vehicle Programs and Emissions Targets

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to oppose H.J. 87-88-89 that are nothing more than attempts to impede California and several other states authority to require clean trucks and clean cars programs in line with emissions reductions targets set by our legislatures and voters. These are politically motivated measures, driven by the fossil fuel companies through a Republican Congress that has long since surrendered its authority for the health and welfare of its constituents. California and other states have adopted the Advanced Clean Trucks and Advanced Clean Cars programs to stimulate the transition to zero-emission vehicles and address disproportionate air pollution burdens in environmental justice communities. Diesel truck traffic in areas like in Los Angeles, Chicago area, and other states exposes residents, especially children, to harmful emissions linked to respiratory illnesses and other health issues. States are attempting to clean up where the offish fuel industry doubles down on harmful emissions in a classic profits over people tactics. The regulations are needed to push manufacturers to make more electric trucks and cars available, supported by charging infrastructure buildout, providing cleaner transportation options. Industry claims of economic harm are outweighed by innovation, spurred by previous emissions rules, as seen at companies like Caterpillar, as well as public health benefits of reduced pollution. With the Republican-led and captive federal government, including actions by the EPA now threatening to impede multiple ’states authority, Congress must take action. Opposing these political attacks by the fossil fuel industry is crucial for accelerating vehicle electrification and environmental justice across all fifty states. Oppose and Vote NO on H.J. 87-88-89 this coming month. Our health and our climate depend on progress, not poisoning people for profit.
