If we truly want energy independence, jobs, and cleaner environment, it’s time to challenge the Republicans again. It’s time to re-introduce the 100% Clean Economy Act.
While we would urge faster action on the goals of the bill itself, i.e. sooner than 2050, we realize that some sectors and agencies will have a tough challenge. The bill does establish the framework for the work that will be required.
Other things we liked about the bill when first introduced years ago:
1. Environmental Justice: The effects of climate change will affect all communities, but some will not be as resilient, or economically capable of withstanding the effects of a world that warms beyond 1.5 degrees Centigrade. Environmental Justice is all about human and civil rights, and is a moral imperative. It must be considered as solutions are implemented, and the bill allows for working class and indigenous voices to be heard as we move towards the 100% Clean Economy.
2. The bill recognizes that we can have an economy with innovation and jobs as we make the transition away from fossil fuels, and make our economy more sustainable.
3. The bill recognizes and codifies the right to clean air and water, and it recognizes that climate change’s many effects are a public health emergency as well.
The importance of this bill in aligning the goals and responsibilities of our key agencies, like the Environmental Protection Agency, is going to be of paramount importance. Our agencies are currently not working towards a cleaner, more just future. We must level-set the directives of these agencies.
