Reclaim Congressional Authority and Prevent War Crimes in Iran

I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the administration’s escalating rhetoric and threats in the war in Iran. Specifically, the President’s recent public threats to target civilian infrastructure—including power plants and water desalination facilities—constitute clear threats to commit war crimes under international law, specifically Article 54 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. As my representatives, you have a constitutional duty to act as a check on executive overreach. By refusing to support a War Powers Resolution, you are leaving the door open for an unconstitutional conflict that puts our service members in an impossible position. Ordering American soldiers to carry out strikes on purely civilian life-sustaining infrastructure is an illegal order. Our troops should never be forced to choose between their duty to the Commander-in-Chief and their legal obligation to refuse orders that violate the laws of armed conflict. The power to declare war rests with Congress, not the White House. I demand that you: - Vote in favor of the War Powers Resolution to require explicit congressional authorization for any further military action against Iran. - Publicly denounce any proposed targeting of civilian infrastructure that would result in a humanitarian catastrophe. The safety of our troops and the moral standing of our nation depend on your willingness to uphold the Constitution. I expect more from my Senators than silent complicity in a march toward an illegal war.
