You and I both need water to survive.
Water is a human right, and yet in the United States, 15 million people had their water shutoff in 2016. During the pandemic, over 91,000 households were saved from water shutoffs by the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP. Last year, LIHWAP helped 228,000 families in 41 states pay for critical drinking water and wastewater services that they otherwise would have lost. LIHWAP is protecting Americans’ human rights.
On September 30th, if you and your fellow members of Congress do not act, LIHWAP will be cut from the budget. Neither of the spending bills passed by the House or Senate appropriations committees allocates funding to keep the program going.
We need you to include reauthorization funding for LIHWAP in the budget. Thousands of Americans could have their water shut off if you don’t take action now.
Please propose an amendment to the appropriations bills for reauthorization funding for LIHWAP before the September 30th deadline. All Americans have a right to clean water, regardless of socioeconomic status.
