An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Do not dismantle the Department of Education

172 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!

Stop this unconstitutional wrecking now. Do NOT allow Trump to destroy the Department of Education. Stand up for the power of Congress: do NOT allow unconstitutional power grabs and impoundment. Consider: As Trump tries to dismantle the Department of Education, remember that his plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 15% would give the 100 largest corporations a tax cut larger than the entire department's K-12 budget. So far nothing Trump has done made Americans safer or improved their lives. 16 years without air crashes, Trump messes with the tsa and faa and we get two. What about USAID? That saves lives and communities. What about leaving the WHO (which can only be done by an act of Congress)? Say NO. Do not permit this. Early childhood, elementary & secondary education programs administered by the Department of Education are vital to our nation’s students While the amount of federal P-12 education funding provided is much less than that supplied by states & localities, federal programs include those within ESSA Title I, II, III, & IV, all of which are vital in supporting students from low-income backgrounds, developing & training educators, & providing resourcesq for English learners, alongside other traditionally underserved students. If conservatives succeed in defunding or killing these programs as they have previously proposed, schools in high-poverty districts would be drained of millions of dollars, crippling their ability to function & exploding the educational attainment gaps that would leave millions of children at huge disadvantages. Students with disabilities would suffer Under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ED is charged with providing & assisting with the implementation of $15 billion designed to provide individual supports for students with disabilities & resources to train and develop educators to ensure those students receive the free appropriate public education they deserve. Students with disabilities would suffer. Without student performance data or school accountability, essential resources & supports would not be allocated No government of decent human beings wants to worsen educational outcomes. Stop the lawless wreckers now
