Protect NC From Energy Rate Hikes
4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to express my deep concern and dismay over the recent approval and implementation of new energy rates by Duke Energy Carolinas, which have significantly increased the financial burden on residents across North Carolina, including myself. This winter, my energy bills more than doubled, a situation that is unsustainable and unacceptable for many families and individuals in our community.
While I understand the necessity of infrastructure improvements and the transition towards more sustainable energy sources, the immediate financial impact on consumers, particularly during these challenging economic times, cannot be overlooked. Many customers are reporting bills that have doubled or tripled, placing an undue strain on household budgets and exacerbating financial insecurities.
I urge you and your colleagues to consider the following actions to mitigate this situation:
1. Regulatory Review and Adjustment: Thoroughly review the recent rate increases and the process by which they were approved, ensuring that the financial implications for consumers were fully considered and that there is transparency in how these decisions are made.
2. Removal of Riders and Unjustifiable Charges: Scrutinize the additional fees and riders that have been appended to consumer bills, removing those that are not absolutely necessary or that disproportionately impact the most vulnerable members of our community.
3. Increased Oversight and Accountability: Implement more stringent regulatory oversight of utility companies to ensure that future rate increases are justified, reasonable, and transparent, with a clear benefit to the consumer and the community at large.
4. Assistance Programs: Expand and promote assistance programs for low-income customers and those particularly affected by these rate hikes, ensuring that these programs are easily accessible and adequately funded.
5. Energy Efficiency Initiatives: Invest in and promote energy efficiency programs that can help reduce overall consumption and lower bills for consumers, providing incentives for both residential and commercial customers to adopt energy-saving measures.
The financial wellbeing of North Carolinians should not be compromised in the pursuit of infrastructure improvements and energy transition. I respectfully request your immediate attention to this matter and look forward to your support in advocating for policies and measures that protect consumers from undue financial hardship.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
