An open letter to the U.S. Congress

If there’s no money for Americans, there shouldn’t be money for war

A billion dollars can address many fundamental human needs at scale. Here are core categories where that level of funding could make a large, measurable impact: 1. Clean Water • Building wells, water treatment plants, and distribution systems • Rainwater collection and sanitation infrastructure • Prevents diseases like cholera and dysentery 2. Food Security • Large-scale food distribution programs • Sustainable agriculture projects and farmer training • Community gardens and regional food storage systems 3. Shelter and Housing • Construction of affordable housing • Disaster-resilient homes in vulnerable regions • Housing-first programs for homelessness 4. Healthcare Access • Building clinics and rural hospitals • Vaccination campaigns and preventative medicine • Maternal and infant care programs 5. Education • Schools, teacher training, and classroom materials • Scholarships and literacy programs • Digital access (internet, devices) 6. Sanitation • Toilets, sewage systems, and waste management • Hygiene education and handwashing infrastructure 7. Energy • Solar microgrids for off-grid communities • Clean cooking stoves to replace wood/coal • Electrification for clinics, schools, and homes 8. Safety and Protection • Domestic violence shelters and support services • Legal aid and protection for vulnerable populations • Disaster preparedness systems 9. Economic Stability • Microfinance and small-business grants • Job training and vocational education • Infrastructure that enables local economies 10. Information and Communication • Internet access in underserved regions • Emergency communication networks • Public information systems for health and safety Perspective: A billion dollars is enough to fund entire national programs in some sectors. For example, global health economists estimate that universal access to basic clean water and sanitation in many regions could be dramatically expanded with investments in the billions. *OR* a billion dollars can be handed out to a wall building company that also facilitates illegal border crossings, essentially building its own business on American tax dollars. Don’t worry- we know which one you chose. Perhaps you could be more fiscally responsible in the future? WE THE PEOPLE are tired of hearing you claim there’s no $ for food and medical, but there’s plenty of money for oppression and world domination. Are we great again yet?
