Happy 90th, Social Security.
FDR built it to protect the aged, disabled, and vulnerable from poverty. Ninety years later, Trump’s people are trying to dismantle it with deliberate staffing cuts, shuttered field offices, and systems so broken they dare you to get your benefits. That’s not “efficiency.” That’s sabotage.
Facts you can’t ignore:
• 6.2 million kids get benefits: nearly a million lifted out of poverty.
• Without it, 4 in 10 older Americans would be living in poverty.
• Admin costs? Less than 1% of spending.
• It’s never missed a payment, not during 9/11, not during Katrina.
• Wealthy folks can fix the future shortfall by paying their fair share; just lift the payroll tax cap.
This isn’t the moment to shrink Social Security. It’s the moment to expand it:
• Boost benefits.
• Restore staff.
• Modernize tech so people can actually access what they’ve earned.
• Keep billionaires out of decision-making.
This is a moral line in the sand. If we cave, millions will face avoidable hardship, inequality will deepen, and trust in democracy will take another hit.
You ran on protecting people. This is that fight.
Be as bold as the generation that built this program.
Stop the cuts. Expand benefits. Make the wealthy finally pay in full.
Do it now, before Social Security’s 90th turns into a funeral.
