Oppose the SAVE Act, MEGA Act, and Similar Voting Restrictions

I am writing to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, and any similar legislation that would restrict voting rights. These bills represent a dangerous threat to the fundamental right to vote that underpins our democracy. The SAVE Act would impose burdensome documentary proof of citizenship requirements that would disenfranchise eligible voters. Millions of Americans, particularly elderly citizens, people with disabilities, and those who have changed their name through marriage, do not have ready access to birth certificates or other documents these bills would require. Creating additional barriers to voter registration solves a problem that does not exist while making it harder for legitimate voters to participate. Similarly, the MEGA Act and related proposals use the false premise of widespread voter fraud to justify restrictions that would suppress turnout among eligible citizens. Study after study has shown that voter fraud is exceedingly rare. A comprehensive analysis of billions of votes cast found the fraud rate to be between 0.0003 and 0.0025 percent. These bills are solutions in search of a problem, and the real consequence would be preventing eligible Americans from exercising their constitutional rights. Our election systems already have robust safeguards in place. States verify voter eligibility through existing databases and processes. What we need is to make voting more accessible, not more difficult. When eligible citizens face obstacles to voting, our democracy is weakened and our government becomes less representative of the people it serves. I urge you to stand firmly against the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, and any legislation that would make it harder for eligible Americans to vote. Instead, I ask that you support measures that protect and expand access to the ballot box for all eligible citizens. Our democracy depends on broad participation, and every eligible voter deserves the opportunity to make their voice heard.
