An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect IRS autonomy - Congressional action against executive overreach

25 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

The decision by the Trump administration to request the IRS initiate a process to revoke Harvard University's tax-exempt status is a blatant violation of federal law that prohibits political interference in IRS affairs. This request, directly stemming from President Trump's public statements, represents a dangerous overreach of executive power and an attack on institutional autonomy. Congress must uphold its constitutional duty as a co-equal branch of government and take immediate action to halt this unlawful conduct. Failure to do so would set a perilous precedent that jeopardizes the integrity of the IRS and enables future administrations to wield the agency as a political weapon against rivals. Protecting democratic norms and safeguarding the rule of law necessitates a firm congressional response through hearings, investigations, and — if warranted — impeachment proceedings to address this egregious violation by the nation's highest office.
