Extremist religious leaders are calling for the reversal of marriage equality and a return to bans on same sex marriage – which has been legal nationwide for a decade since a Supreme Court decision in 2015, and was legal in some states such as Massachusetts a whole decade earlier than that. The Republican political right is also pushing this agenda. There are more than a million same sex households in the States, when you include cohabiting couples as well as married couples. Overturning same sex marriage should be unthinkable – but then, overturning Roe v Wade should have been unthinkable. There is a risk that, starting with the most right wing States – the same ones with current abortion bans – these rights will start being peeled back. At the State level, we need to protect marriage equality by getting rid of any outdated anti-same sex marriage laws and amendments dormant in our legislation that could be used against our neighbors; and by implementing explicit marriage equality protections into our constitution. It is Pride Month! Please stand up for marriage equality in our State by pursuing these measures.
