I am writing to urge you to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare. These programs are essential lifelines for millions of Americans, providing dignity in retirement and critical health care access and the actions of the current administration have put their financial stability in question.
To ensure long-term stability, we must enhance program funding without cutting benefits. There are fair and responsible ways to do this, such as:
Lifting or eliminating the cap on taxable earnings so high-income earners contribute their fair share.
Exploring modest revenue measures, like a small surtax on very high incomes or certain financial transactions, to bolster program reserves.
Reinstating programs like the Retirement and Disability Research Consortium and the Office of Analytics, Review, and Oversight that were specifically charged with reducing waste and fraud will help to ensure every dollar is used as effectively as possible.
Americans have paid into these programs with the promise they will be there when needed. Preserving and improving them is not only a matter of fiscal responsibility but also of honoring that commitment.
I strongly encourage you to oppose any cuts to benefits and instead work toward sustainable solutions that reinforce these programs for current and future generations.
Thank you for your leadership on this critical issue.
