Support Resolution for Responsible AI Data Center Development

I am writing to urge you to introduce and support a resolution addressing the rapid growth of AI data centers and their impact on our communities. The unprecedented expansion of these facilities to support services like ChatGPT and Gemini is putting immense strain on our local resources and infrastructure.
These AI data centers require massive amounts of electricity and water, threatening our power grids and depleting our water supplies. Major tech companies are investing billions in this infrastructure, often receiving tax incentives that shift costs to local taxpayers. This rapid development is outpacing our ability to manage its consequences effectively.
While the current administration is pushing for streamlined regulations to accelerate AI development, we must not overlook the environmental and community impacts. Local residents are rightfully concerned about water depletion, increased energy demands, and changes to their neighborhoods. Our U.S. energy grid is already struggling to keep up with the increased demand from these facilities.
I ask you to propose a resolution that would:
1. Mandate full disclosure of water consumption by data centers
2. Require environmental impact assessments before approving new AI data center projects
3. Limit tax incentives for data centers unless they meet strict sustainability criteria
4. Invest in upgrading our energy infrastructure to support increased demand sustainably
5. Encourage the development of flexible data centers and closed-loop water systems
We must find a balance between technological advancement and environmental stewardship. While AI development is important, it cannot come at the cost of our communities' well-being and natural resources. By passing this resolution, you will show leadership in addressing these critical issues and ensuring responsible growth in the AI sector.
The time to act is now, before the rapid expansion of AI data centers creates irreversible damage to our local ecosystems and infrastructure. I urge you to take this step towards responsible AI development that considers the long-term health of our communities and environment.
