An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Investigate EPA's Unlawful Approval of PFAS Pesticide Isocycloseram

27 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing to urge you to investigate the Environmental Protection Agency's approval of isocycloseram, a PFAS forever chemical insecticide that the agency's own science shows poses serious risks to human health and the environment. This approval appears to violate the Food Quality Protection Act and demands congressional oversight. The EPA's own human health risk assessment found that long-term dietary exposure in rats led to reduced testicle size, increased testicular degeneration, and reduced sperm count. Australian regulators found the pesticide induced skeletal malformations in fetal rats, and other research indicated it may be carcinogenic. Despite these findings, the EPA approved isocycloseram for use on apples, oranges, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, bell peppers, cucumbers, peaches, almonds, wheat, and oats. The lawsuit filed by the Center for Biological Diversity and other public health groups alleges that the EPA failed to adequately consider adverse health effects to children and developing fetuses as required by federal law. Nathan Donley, environmental health science director with the Center for Biological Diversity, stated that the EPA did not factor these risks into its safety assessment. The agency allegedly did not follow the Food Quality Protection Act mandate to lower the health risk threshold tenfold for child safety. This pesticide persists in the environment for at least hundreds of years and degrades into 40 smaller PFAS chemicals. The EPA's own science predicts significant adverse effects on more than 1,000 threatened and endangered species. It is also highly toxic to pollinators, which could be exposed to 1,500 times the lethal level near treated fields. Congress must investigate how the EPA made this decision, who was responsible, whether the science was followed, and what the repercussions will be for Americans and our environment. If political appointees overruled scientists, the American public deserves to know. The EPA's chemical safety office is now led by Kyle Kunkler, a former lobbyist for the American Soybean Association, working under two former American Chemistry Council lobbyists and overseen by Douglas Troutman, who received an endorsement from the American Chemistry Council. I urge you to launch an investigation into this approval process and hold the EPA accountable for protecting public health over corporate interests.
