Maintain Veterans Day to honor all who served

The president's proposal to rename Veterans Day as "Victory Day for World War I" and create a separate "Victory Day for World War II" on May 8th is deeply concerning. Veterans Day has been a solemn observance since 1954 to honor all those who have served in the U.S. armed forces, not just during the World Wars. Renaming this federal holiday would diminish its significance and fail to properly recognize the sacrifices of millions of veterans across all conflicts. Furthermore, establishing new "Victory Days" overlooks the immense human cost and complexity of those wars. While commemorating major achievements is understandable, we must be thoughtful about how we mark such events, especially when it risks minimizing the profound loss of life. I urge you to maintain Veterans Day as it stands and reconsider creating separate commemorations that could be viewed as overly celebratory of war itself. Our gratitude to veterans should remain the priority on November 11th.
