Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to oppose H.R. 1, that proposes devastating cuts and misguided investments that would significantly undermine civil and human rights across the country. There are so many bad provisions in the bill, I can't write enough on each one, but here's a summary of its worst excesses.
1. This ill-conceived legislation prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans at the expense of vital programs and services millions rely on. To do this, it makes the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, jeopardizing healthcare access for millions, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and communities of color.
2. It defunds Planned Parenthood, restricting access to essential reproductive and preventive care, particularly for low-income and underserved communities.
3. The bill upends food assistance through unprecedented cuts to SNAP benefits that help over 40 million people afford basic nutrition. It ignores the 17 million children currently excluded from the full Child Tax Credit owing to their families income level.
4. The bill weakens critical protections for student borrowers and slashes financial aid, undermining higher education access and affordability. It creates sketchy voucher schemes that divert funding away from public schools serving 90% of students.
5. It cuts funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is eliminated, stripping oversight that has returned billions to consumers harmed by predatory practices of lenders and credit issuers.
6. More alarmingly, H.R. 1 allocates billions more for pointless mass deportation operations that simply threaten civil rights and civil liberties.
7. It also imposes a moratorium preventing states from enacting safeguards against artificial intelligence risks like algorithmic bias and disinformation. Bias would go from bad to worse. No ethical guidelines are being followed.
8. The bill touches Federal court powers to enforce injunctions are improperly restricted, undermining judicial authority and the rule of law.
It also ADDS not reduces trillions to the deficit, completely belying the idea of fiscal responsibility.
I urge you to reject this destructive bill that undermines civil and human rights, food programs, and helps the wealthy at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens. Thank you. Vote NO on H.R. 1!
