Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you in the strongest possible terms to oppose the nomination of Jeremy Carl to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations. In light of the recent racist social media posts by President Trump and others allegedly representing our executive branch, his nomination must be stopped.
This position requires someone who can effectively represent the United States in diplomatic engagement with the United Nations and other multilateral bodies on critical issues including human rights, labor rights, refugees, international migration, and global development. Mr. Carl's public record demonstrates he is a demented lunatic unsuited for this role.
Mr. Carl has long promoted the discredited and racist "replacement theory" of immigration, which portrays non-white populations and immigrants as threats to our nation's future. This inflammatory rhetoric is utterly incompatible with the diplomatic skills required to engage with international partners across diverse cultural, racial, and national backgrounds. According to many reports by CNN and others, his embrace of this conspiracy theory raises serious questions about his sanity, and ability to advance American interests in multilateral forums where building trust and coalition is essential.
Additionally, Mr. Carl has praised the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and has used hostile language against a U.S. labor leader. This pattern of divisive public statements undermines the credibility and effectiveness any Assistant Secretary must have when representing our country on the world stage.
The Assistant Secretary for International Organizations serves as America's voice in critical conversations about equality, justice, and human dignity. Confirming someone with Mr. Carl's track record would damage our standing with allies and partners who expect the United States to uphold these values. Our foreign policy should reflect our highest ideals, not amplify conspiracy theories and divisive rhetoric.
I urge you to reject this nomination and support a candidate who demonstrates the diplomatic temperament, commitment to human rights, and ability to build international coalitions that this position demands.
Thank you for your consideration and leadership on this critical matter.
