An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Contact the Governor and tell them DON'T deploy the National Guard to assist ICE

Please, contact the Governor and tell them to NOT deploy the National Guard to assist ICE. Unless the role of the National Guard is to provide transparency, ensure innocent US citizens are not detained, ensure due process for those detained, and oversee the ethical treatment of the people detained, the National Guard should not assist ICE. I'm very concerned that supporting ICE at this time would further destabilize and stoke more fear throughout communities; unnecessarily traumatizing innocent children and families. The ACLU has pointed out-and it has been reported in the news-that throughout the country, on many occasions, ICE has operated unlawfully, and unethically. ICE has taken student visa holders off the street, detained DACA recipients, and detained United States citizens. I'm most alarmed and concerned about the reports mentioning the increase in the abduction and treatment of US citizens. I've read in the news that of the people detained by ICE nearly half lack a criminal record. It is also being reported in the news that some ICE agents appear to be racially profiling people and abducting them without probable cause to meet a quota. I've seen in the news that many alleged ICE officers hide their faces, and don't always provide identification and a signed warrant. I've read in the news that much of the time: family members are not informed of the apprehension, due process is being denied, attorneys are denied entry to meet with their clients, and deportation to detention centers might be within the United States or possibly in a country of unknown origin. The news media have already reported multiple cases of people -who were eventually released- being subjected to inhumane treatment during their detention. There are also news reports of people being severely injured, physically assaulted, sexually assaulted, becoming severely ill, or dying while in detention. These are not actions the state should willingly support. Assistance could be viewed as complicity. With the amount of funding provided to ICE via the OBBB, why would they need assistance from any other agency? They are sacrificing the health and well-being of millions of citizens by taking away their access to healthcare and other social services, yet they provided an exorbitant amount of funding to ICE. Shameful. I'm very concerned that what has been and is happening in Los Angeles with ICE will spread to our state. I'm very concerned for our city, especially being that it is so beautifully diverse. Unless the role of the National Guard is to provide transparency, ensure innocent US citizens are not detained, ensure due process for those detained, and oversee the ethical treatment of the people detained, I'm asking you to contact the Governor and request that they do NOT deploy the National Guard to assist ICE. Thank you.
