Protect free speech and academic freedom from overreach

This administration's threats to cut funding for colleges and universities that allow peaceful protests are a concerning overreach of executive power. The rights to free speech and assembly are foundational pillars of our democracy, enshrined in the First Amendment of the Constitution. Attempts to suppress these liberties through financial coercion of academic institutions pose a grave risk to our system of checks and balances. Colleges and universities serve as vital forums for open discourse, debate, and the free exchange of ideas – activities that are crucial for an engaged and informed citizenry. Curtailing protests deemed "illegal" without clear definitions or due process undermines academic freedom and the principles of intellectual inquiry. Financial threats only breed self-censorship and a chilling effect on campus. Rather than resorting to heavy-handed tactics, this administration should respect the autonomy of higher education and work constructively with these institutions as partners in nurturing the next generation of critical thinkers. Disagreement and protest have long catalyzed positive social change; stifling such expression jeopardizes societal progress. We call on our elected leaders to safeguard constitutional rights and reject any encroachments on civil liberties under the guise of public order.
