I am writing to demand that you protect and expand access to vaccines for all people in our state. Vaccines save lives. They are one of the greatest achievements of modern science and modern medicine, and they have prevented countless deaths from diseases like measles, polio, chickenpox, influenza, and COVID-19.
I do not want to get sick or watch my loved ones get sick from a disease that we already know how to prevent. It is unacceptable for political agendas or misinformation to stand in the way of public health. If some people choose not to get vaccinated, that is their decision. But no one should be allowed to block access for those of us who believe in science, medicine, and protecting our communities.
We have already seen what happens when vaccination rates drop. In 2019, the United States experienced its largest measles outbreak in decades, with more than 1,200 confirmed cases across 31 states. Most of those infections were in communities where vaccination rates had fallen. That outbreak could have been avoided if strong vaccine protections and access had been in place. We cannot afford to repeat this mistake.
Restricting vaccines only puts more people at risk—especially children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. It also weakens our healthcare system and economy by making outbreaks more likely. The evidence is clear: vaccines are safe, effective, and necessary.
I urge you to stand up for public health, for science, and for the freedom of families to choose protection from preventable disease. Do not let our state move backward. Ensure that every person has access to the vaccines that save lives.
