I'm deeply concerned about the recent mass firings of federal workers. These terminations represent a clear violation of merit system principles intended to prevent politically motivated purges that disrupt essential government operations. These firings were carried out indiscriminately without proper evaluation of individual performance. The illegal firing of thousands of workers threatens our national security, public safety, economy, and natural resources, specifically:
(1) Managing our nuclear arsenal and strategic assets.
(2) Efforts to track and halt the ongoing bird flu outbreak, now endemic to livestock and projected to cost billions of dollars.
(3) Protecting the quality of our air, water, and national parks (consider environmental degradation in developing nations where similar protections are absent).
(4) Maintaining our national security through the federal civilian workforce within the DoD and its subordinates.
(5) Providing essential care to those we have a duty and moral responsibility to protect, including veterans, first responders (including those affected by 9/11), and healthcare workers.
Many of those terminated had received consistently positive performance reviews and were diligently fulfilling the tasks assigned by their supervisors. This, coupled with the recent mandate to provide status reports to DOGE, appears designed to harass and demoralize the federal workforce. While the probationary period for employees is intended to ensure their competence in performing job duties, the mass firings and micromanagement by DOGE and OPM are creating a hostile working environment with the goal of shrinking the size and influence of the U.S. Government to benefit corporations and the wealthiest individuals.
The cumulative effect of these actions will be staggering: billions of dollars spent on lawsuits, wasted time responding to frivolous emails and initiatives, reduced output from a demoralized workforce, a diminished ability to attract talented and motivated individuals to public service, and a further erosion of confidence in the United States, both domestically and internationally.
Therefore, I urge you to take immediate and decisive action to curtail the destructive efforts by DOGE and the executive branch against the United States government workforce. Specifically, I request that you:
* Launch a formal investigation into the actions of DOGE and the administration regarding these mass firings and their impact on government operations.
* Demand that Elon Musk testify before Congress to explain the structure, authority, and objectives of DOGE.
* Introduce and support legislation to protect federal employees from politically motivated firings and ensure adherence to merit system principles.
The stability and effectiveness of our government depend on a dedicated and qualified workforce. Protecting that workforce is essential to safeguarding our nation's future. Thank you for your time and consideration.
