Reject politicization of Kennedy Center's leadership and programming

The Kennedy Center is an iconic cultural institution that must remain free from political interference and control. President Trump's attempt to dismiss the current trustees and appoint himself as chair is an unprecedented overreach that threatens the center's independence and creative freedom. This self-described "takeover" aims to impose a singular "vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture" on one of America's preeminent arts organizations. However, the cultural sector thrives when it operates autonomously, without being beholden to any administration's particular artistic preferences or ideological agendas. A robust democracy requires safeguarding spaces for unfettered creative expression, free from government dictates or censorship. The Kennedy Center has flourished for over 50 years by embracing diverse voices and perspectives across artistic disciplines. Its programming should continue to be guided by its expert leadership and curatorial staff, not by partisan political forces. Allowing elected officials to purge the board and exert control over the center's direction is a deeply concerning erosion of its institutional integrity. We urge our elected representatives to take immediate action to protect the Kennedy Center's independence and block this brazen political takeover attempt. Preserving the center's autonomy is essential to upholding America's commitment to artistic freedom and the vital role that vibrant cultural institutions play in a healthy democracy. The Kennedy Center belongs to the people, not any single president or administration.
