I am a constituent writing to demand a clear and public response to President Trump’s remarks suggesting the cancellation of the 2026 midterm elections, made on the anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Invoking the cancellation of elections on January 6th—whether framed as a joke or not—is threatening and ominous. That date marks a violent attempt to overturn a lawful election and block the peaceful transfer of power. In that context, any suggestion that elections are optional or negotiable is an attack on constitutional democracy. The record is clear: January 6th was a violent assault on our democracy, instigated to retain power after an election loss. As an elected official sworn to uphold the Constitution, you have a duty to respond plainly. The Constitution guarantees the people—not any officeholder—the power to choose our leaders. The public requires your explicit assurance that this right will be upheld, protected, and never treated as optional. I am calling on you to publicly pledge to oppose any effort to cancel, delay, or undermine the 2026 midterms or any other election, and to affirm that free and fair elections are non-negotiable.
