An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Texas only)
Protect Texas’ Democracy!!!
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed mid-decade redistricting in Texas. This is nothing more than a blatant power grab that undermines the democratic principles our state and nation are built on.
Redistricting is intended to occur once every ten years after the Census to reflect population changes fairly and transparently. Attempting to redraw the maps mid-decade—without a constitutional mandate—sets a dangerous precedent that invites endless political manipulation. It tells Texans that our votes are subject to change whenever those in power see an opportunity to tilt the playing field in their favor.
Texas already suffers from some of the most gerrymandered maps in the country. The last round of redistricting split neighborhoods, carved up cities, and diluted the voting power of communities of color to protect incumbents and political party control. Now, instead of addressing those injustices, the Legislature is considering doubling down by reshaping districts again to lock in advantage before the next election cycle.
Mid-decade redistricting would:
• Disrupt communities and representation by moving voters into unfamiliar districts and away from their chosen representatives.
• Waste taxpayer dollars on an unnecessary process that benefits politicians, not the public.
• Undermine public trust by sending the message that elections are rigged before ballots are even cast.
• Exacerbate voter confusion and discourage participation in upcoming elections.
This is not about fair representation—it is about consolidating power at the expense of the people of Texas. If this goes forward, it will become an open invitation for future legislatures to redraw maps whenever they feel politically threatened, turning elections into a cynical game rather than a reflection of the voters’ will.
I urge you to reject this proposed mid-decade redistricting and instead support an independent, nonpartisan redistricting commission. Texans deserve fair maps drawn in the sunlight, not in backrooms.
The integrity of our democracy in Texas depends on it.
