Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
“People who are judges on the Supreme Courts have personal lives, they have families,” the Senate Judiciary Committee member [John Cornyn] said. “And I don’t think they’re necessarily responsible for everything their families do or say.”
I have a question for my senior Senator from Texas. Weren’t you a Texas Supreme Court Justice? How did you feel about exhibiting blatant partisan tendencies while you were expected to be an impartial voice for justice? Did you tout your personal beliefs? Did you tell your family ‘Don’t mind me and my job. Do as you please. I’m sure it’ll be fine. People will understand that it’s not my opinion that’s flying on the flag pole. And if they don’t, I’ll just blame it on you.’
Opinions through actions, either by family members or by justices, are the point of our current concern with Justice Alito. We should not know what their personal opinions are. Period. Justice is blind. And when a Justice in the highest court in the land throws this impartiality to the winds, it should concern us all.
Please do the old shoe-on-the other-foot exercise…what if Justice Jackson flew a Black Lives Matter flag? Or an upside down American flag? Or if any of the female Justices flew any political/ideology flag at all? How would you comment on that?
I think I answered my own question. In those cases, your answer would probably be the opposite of live and let live.
If you can’t be impartial, or quiet about your own personal beliefs, and you’re a Supreme Court Justice, you should leave your lifetime appointment and become a politician.
At least then we could have a say in whether you should keep your job.
Senator Cornyn, don’t be an apologist for something you know is wrong.
