An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject immigrant social media monitoring policy violating free speech

The administration's new policy to monitor immigrants' social media for alleged antisemitic activity and deny immigration benefits based on that is deeply concerning. This sets a dangerous precedent that could lead to widespread suppression of free speech under the guise of fighting extremism. Defining what qualifies as "antisemitic activity" on social media is highly subjective and open to partisan misuse. This policy has worrying parallels to the notorious House Un-American Activities Committee and the persecution of dissidents during the McCarthy era. Denying people's rights without due process based on their perceived political views is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes, not a free democratic society. History has shown how such overreach can rapidly expand from targeting immigrants to suppressing the civil liberties of all citizens. I urge you to speak out against this policy and any attempts to curtail fundamental freedoms like free speech. We must remain vigilant against any efforts by the government to violate constitutional rights under the pretext of national security. Protecting free expression is vital for preserving American democracy.
