An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Take back Congress's tariff powers!

The Trump administration's decision to eliminate the de minimis provision for imported packages will have severe economic consequences for small businesses and consumers alike. This long-standing policy has allowed Americans to affordably purchase goods from abroad, fostering competition and keeping prices low. Removing this exemption will result in higher costs, hindering the ability of small online retailers to compete effectively. Furthermore, the expansion of tariffs undermines Congress's constitutional authority to regulate international trade. These unilateral actions by the executive branch undermine the system of checks and balances. It is imperative that Congress reasserts its power over tariff policy to protect American economic interests and uphold the principles of our democratic system of government. The de minimis exemption has been a boon for small businesses and consumer choice. Its elimination, coupled with the presidente's unrestrained imposition of tariffs, threatens to inflict substantial harm. Retaining this provision and reestablishing Congress's role in setting trade policies are crucial steps to safeguarding American competitiveness and prosperity.
