Stop Turning the Post Office Into a Gun Trafficking Pipeline

Mr. President:
Your administration just decided that a gun law we've had since 1927 — one passed specifically to keep concealable firearms out of the mail — is somehow "unconstitutional". Now USPS is proposing a rule to allow anyone to ship a handgun directly to another person — no licensed dealer required, no background check on the recipient, just drop it in the mail like it's an Amazon return.
The existing system wasn't a ban but a safeguard. When a gun moved through a licensed dealer, that dealer had to run a background check and log the firearm, which is how law enforcement traces guns found at crime scenes.
But apparently that level of accountability was too much for your administration.
This isn't a standalone decision — it's a pattern by Republicans. Your administration gutted gun violence prevention funding by more than $800 million, slashed the inspectors monitoring licensed gun dealers by two-thirds, and opened a DOJ office dedicated exclusively to advancing gun owners' interests.
As you know, the vast majority of Americans of all parties and communities are demanding want commonsense gun laws. The ability to mail handguns anonymously renders any other controls almost irrelevant.
Attorneys General in 24 states are fighting it. John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said it would turn the US Postal Service into a "gun trafficking pipeline" — that's what happens when you let anyone ship a handgun to anyone with no paper trail and no background check.
The USPS that your Republicans have spent a decade trying to defund is apparently the right vehicle for unregulated handgun delivery.
No one sane wants this. We see this for what it is and will vote accordingly in the midterms — up and down the ballot.
