More oversight of the Texas Railroad Commission
4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
The oil and gas industry's push for state regulation of carbon dioxide injection projects raises valid concerns about proper oversight and environmental safeguards. Texas' track record on regulating injection wells and protecting groundwater sources has been inadequate, with instances of seismic activity, sinkholes, and leaks from improperly plugged wells. Granting the Texas Railroad Commission primacy over permitting these projects without robust standards and enforcement mechanisms could lead to lax oversight and put our air, water, and public health at risk. While the industry touts potential efficiency gains, we must prioritize ensuring stringent environmental protections are in place to prevent irreversible damage from these carbon capture activities. I urge you to scrutinize the state's proposed regulatory framework and staffing capabilities thoroughly before transferring this authority. Texans' well-being should take precedence over industry expediency on an issue with such grave environmental implications.
