An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Law enforcement identifying themselves

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am outraged seeing law federal law enforcement officers arresting people who are covering their faces. It is reported that they are not identifying themselves verbally either. I could understand if they were “working undercover.” I can understand when they want stealth to prevent the person they are pursuing. But once they have the person in custody, and are in public places, they need to show badges, identification, and their faces. In the recent arrest of the mayor of Trenton, NJ, there were many of the officers who were masked. It raises questions. Are these masked people actually who they say they are? They could be Proud Boys, or some other “militia” members who don’t belong there. I don’t believe that is possible with those in the group that arrested the mayor, but what about the masked people in the streets of our cities picking up people off our streets. There should be a law that sets up that the default is that law enforcement identifies themselves, shows identification, warrants for arrest, and their faces. It can lay out the exceptions where they don’t have to, but most of the time it should be required. Even if such a law would not pass in the current political environment, it should be proposed if only as a protest to this current outrageous behavior.
