Gov. Pillen‘s Executive Order Harms Trans Veterans and Trans Nebraskans

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order in August establishing a “Women’s Bill of Rights,” declaring a “biological definition of male and female” and detailing the differences between the sexes.
While this sounds innocuous, this executive order poses a significant threat to the rights and freedoms of transgender individuals in Nebraska, including those who have served our country. It is crucial to remember that every citizen, regardless of gender identity, deserves equal treatment and protection under the law. This order undermines this principle, potentially leading to discrimination and marginalization.
Per State Senator Megan Hunt (Omaha), “[Gov. Pillen] should be aware of all the federal funding that could be taken away from Nebraska were this proclamation to be enforced. Federal funding sources for domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers have provisions protecting trans survivors. I know Governor Pillen probably hates that fact that trans people would ever be protected or safe, but that’s how it works today and he’s putting Nebraskans in danger by continuing to make this group the entire focus of his ignorant and discriminatory agenda.”
The goal should be to ensure that all citizens, including transgender individuals, are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. This is not just about upholding individual rights but also about fostering a society that values diversity and inclusion. I request immediate action to review and reconsider this order.
