An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Utah only)

Support Legislation to Ban Masked Federal Agents in Utah

I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you, along with the Governor, Senate, and House of Utah, to support and pass legislation prohibiting federal law enforcement officers from wearing masks while operating in our state. This issue is of critical importance to the safety, transparency, and trust within our communities. Senator Nate Blouin has proposed a measure to address this pressing concern, and I strongly believe it warrants your immediate attention and support. The practice of allowing federal agents to conceal their identities while carrying out law enforcement duties is deeply troubling and undermines the principles of accountability that are fundamental to our democracy. While the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency argues that masks protect their officers from potential doxing and threats to their families, this rationale fails to outweigh the significant risks posed to public safety and trust. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has endorsed this measure, recognizing its importance in safeguarding civil liberties and promoting transparency in law enforcement operations. I acknowledge that this legislation may face legal challenges regarding state authority over federal agencies. However, it is imperative that Utah takes a firm stance on this issue. Other states are considering similar proposals, indicating a growing national concern about federal law enforcement accountability. By leading on this issue, Utah can set a precedent for transparency and responsible policing practices nationwide. The potential for abuse and impersonation when federal agents are allowed to operate with concealed identities is a serious threat to public safety. Even if such occurrences are rare in Utah, as noted by immigration attorney Christopher Vizcardo, the mere possibility is unacceptable and must be proactively addressed through legislation. I urge you to work collaboratively across party lines to support and pass this crucial measure. This is not a partisan issue but a matter of maintaining the integrity of law enforcement and protecting the rights of Utah's citizens. By prohibiting masked federal agents, we can ensure that those enforcing the law in our state are identifiable and accountable for their actions. Your support for this legislation will demonstrate a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the safety of Utah's communities. I respectfully request that you take immediate action to advance this measure through the legislative process and secure its passage into law. The citizens of Utah deserve nothing less than full transparency from all law enforcement operating within our borders.
