Uphold Veto on SB1002 to Protect Student Wellbeing and Teacher Rights

I am writing to express my strong support for upholding the veto on Arizona Senate Bill 1002 from the 2025 legislative session. This bill, which was vetoed by the Governor on May 12, 2025, would have imposed harmful restrictions on public school employees and contractors regarding the use of pronouns and names for students. SB1002 sought to prohibit school staff from using pronouns or names for students that differ from their "biological sex" without written parental permission. This approach fails to recognize the complex realities of gender identity and the importance of creating a supportive environment for all students. By requiring parental permission, the bill could potentially out students to unsupportive families, putting them at risk of emotional harm or even physical danger. Furthermore, the bill attempted to prevent schools from requiring employees to use pronouns or titles that do not correspond to a person's sex as a condition of employment. This provision could lead to a hostile work environment for transgender and non-binary staff members, as well as create confusion and potential legal issues for school administrations trying to maintain inclusive policies. The legislative process for SB1002 was extensive, passing through various committees and votes in both the Senate and House before the Governor's veto. This indicates that there was significant debate and consideration of the bill's implications. By vetoing the bill, the Governor demonstrated a commitment to protecting the rights and wellbeing of all students and school employees in Arizona. I urge you to stand firm in support of the Governor's decision and resist any attempts to override this veto. Upholding the veto will send a clear message that Arizona values inclusivity, respects individual identities, and prioritizes the mental health and safety of its students and educators. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to seeing continued efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all Arizonans.
