Expand House to strengthen democracy and representation

The House of Representatives should be expanded to better reflect the growing population of the United States. The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 capped the number of representatives at 435, despite our nation's population more than doubling since then. This law is outdated and undemocratic, resulting in each representative covering far too many constituents compared to when it was enacted. Expanding the House would make representatives more accountable and responsive to the people they represent. Voters would have a stronger voice and closer connection to their member of Congress. It's illogical that European nations with much smaller populations have far more representatives in their legislative bodies. Larger districts driven by our population growth have empowered money in politics and incumbency advantages over democratic representation. Furthermore, increasing the number of representatives would make the Electoral College system more reflective of the national popular vote in presidential elections. The disproportionate "Senate bump" that smaller states receive would be diminished, reducing the likelihood of a candidate winning the presidency while losing the popular vote, as occurred in 2016. Repealing the Permanent Apportionment Act is crucial for strengthening American democracy and ensuring the House truly represents the people. I urge you to support legislation to significantly expand the number of representatives and make Congress more representative of our nation's population.
