At the same time, recent statements by Trump that appear to threaten catastrophic violence on a civilizational scale demand immediate and serious attention. This is not rhetorical excess that can be ignored. When a president invokes the destruction of an entire civilization, it raises urgent questions about judgment, stability, and the potential consequences of unchecked power. To refuse even to debate these issues is to send a dangerous message that accountability is optional and that political loyalty outweighs constitutional obligation. That message weakens Congress, undermines the system of checks and balances, and erodes public trust in the most basic promise of American governance: that no individual is above the law. There is no constitutional principle that justifies avoiding debate under these circumstances. There is no precedent that excuses silence in the face of potential threats of this magnitude. The role of Congress is not to shield political allies from scrutiny, but to confront difficult questions directly and in full view of the American people. History will not regard inaction kindly.
